Portraits for Someone Remarkable
Some people leave behind possessions. Others leave photographs.
A truly meaningful portrait can leave something more: a sense of the person themselves.
At Kandrzej Archiva Fotografia, I create fine-art portraits for people whose lives, character, and presence deserve to be remembered. The Atelier is a private portrait practice built around large-format black-and-white film, deliberate observation, and the belief that a portrait can become part of a family's history.
For more than forty years, I have worked as a photojournalist, photographing presidents, business leaders, artists, musicians, and individuals whose lives and stories mattered. That experience taught me that the most important part of portraiture is not the camera. It is learning to see the person.
A Portrait That Endures
There is a difference between making a photograph and making a portrait intended to endure.
A photograph records a moment.
A portrait can preserve a presence.
Children grow older. Parents become grandparents. Families move from one generation to the next. Eventually, photographs become one of the ways a family remembers the people who came before them.
The portrait on the wall becomes part of everyday life.
A child grows up seeing the face of a grandfather. A grandchild encounters someone they may know only through family stories.
That is the kind of portrait I am interested in making.
Large-Format Film
The Atelier is built around the deliberate process of large-format black-and-white film portraiture.
The large-format camera slows the experience down. The sitter becomes aware that the photograph is being made with intention. There is time to settle, to talk, and eventually to forget about the camera.
The resulting negative is a physical object—not a digital file. It is the sheet of film that was present in the camera when the portrait was made, recording the light reflected from the person at that moment.
For Atelier commissions, the selected Master Negative is transferred to the family archive along with the finished work.
For Someone Remarkable
A remarkable person does not have to be famous.
They may be a parent, grandparent, artist, physician, entrepreneur, teacher, musician, collector, or simply someone whose life has profoundly shaped the lives of others.
The purpose of the portrait is not celebrity.
It is significance.
The Atelier accepts a limited number of private commissions each year and operates under a strict protocol of discretion. Names, family histories, homes, and commissioned portraits remain confidential unless a client specifically gives permission for them to be shared.
The most important question is not simply: How did this person look?
It is: What will their family feel when they look at this portrait fifty or one hundred years from now?
That is the portrait I am interested in making.
