But possessions tell only part of a person's story.
A portrait can preserve the person.

Made for Future Generations
The Atelier approaches portraiture with the future in mind.
The portrait is not simply intended to document how someone looks today. It is made for the people who will look at it later.
Large-format black-and-white film gives the sitting a deliberate pace. The camera requires attention, the sitter has time to settle, and the photographer has time to observe.
The resulting negative is a physical original.
It is the sheet of film that was actually exposed during the sitting, recording the light reflected from the person at that particular moment.
The Master Negative
Each Atelier commission includes the creation and preservation of a Master Negative.
The selected negative becomes the source for the finished fine-art portrait and, after the commissioned work is completed, is transferred to the family's archive.
The finished portrait remains on the wall.
The original negative remains with the family.
Together, they preserve both the artwork and the physical photographic original from which it was made.
A Legacy Does Not Require Fame
A legacy portrait is not necessarily a portrait of a famous person.
It may be a portrait of a parent, grandparent, spouse, artist, physician, entrepreneur, teacher, farmer, musician, collector, or someone whose life has simply mattered enormously to the people around them.
The purpose is not celebrity.
It is significance.
The Atelier exists for families who believe that someone's presence deserves to be preserved.

The most meaningful portraits are often the most private.
The Atelier operates under a strict protocol of discretion. Names, family histories, homes, and commissioned portraits remain confidential unless a client specifically gives permission for them to be shared.
Private commissions are not treated as promotional material.
The work belongs to the family.

A century from now, the portrait may still hang in the family home.
Someone who never met the person may stand before it and wonder: “Who was she?” and “What was he like?”
The portrait cannot answer every question.
