Large-Format Portraiture
Large-format portraiture creates a different experience between photographer and sitter.
The camera is substantial. The process is deliberate. The pace slows down.
At Kandrzej Archiva Fotografia, large-format black-and-white film is the foundation of The Atelier, a private fine-art portrait practice created for families, collectors, and estates.
The Large-Format Experience
A large-format camera requires attention.
The composition is considered carefully. The light is studied. The photographer works beneath the dark cloth. The sitter has time to settle into the experience.
There is no rush toward the next frame.
That slower process changes the relationship between photographer and subject.
The camera becomes less about taking a photograph and more about creating the conditions for a portrait to emerge.
The Original Negative
Large-format photography uses individual sheets of film.
The sheet exposed during the sitting is a physical original. It records the light reflected from the person at that particular moment.
For Atelier commissions, one negative is selected as the Master Negative. It becomes the source for the finished fine-art portrait and is subsequently transferred to the family archive.
The finished portrait remains on the wall.
The original negative remains with the family.
Black-and-White Film
The Atelier works primarily in black-and-white because it allows attention to move toward light, expression, texture, gesture, and character.
It also gives the portrait a quality that is less tied to a particular fashion or decade.
The intention is not to recreate the past.
It is to create something that can remain meaningful in the future.
The Finished Portrait
The standard Atelier portrait is a 20 × 24-inch fine-art print presented in an approximately 40 × 48-inch framed work.
Each portrait is personally signed and individually numbered and documented as part of the commissioned work.
The portrait is made for the place where it will live—a family home, estate, library, or private collection.
Portraiture Built Around the Person
For more than forty years, I have worked as a photojournalist and portrait photographer, photographing presidents, business leaders, artists, musicians, and individuals whose stories mattered.
That experience informs the way I approach a portrait today.
The large-format camera can record extraordinary detail.
The more important task is seeing the person.
A portrait should reveal more than appearance.
It should reveal presence.
Private Commissions
The Atelier operates under a strict protocol of discretion.
Names, family histories, homes, and commissioned portraits remain confidential unless a client specifically gives permission for them to be shared.
The studio accepts no more than twelve private commissions each year and works throughout Colorado, across the United States, and internationally.
