A Life in Film Photography
For more than forty years, photography has been the way I have learned to see people.
I began with film and built my career as a photojournalist, photographing presidents, business leaders, artists, musicians, and individuals whose lives and stories mattered.
Today, that experience has become The Atelier at Kandrzej Archiva Fotografia, my private fine-art portrait practice devoted to large-format black-and-white film portraiture.
Film Was Never a Fashion Choice
Film is not a return to an earlier aesthetic for me.
It is the medium in which I learned photography.
Working with film requires attention before the exposure is made. The photographer must see the light, understand the subject, anticipate the moment, and make a deliberate decision.
That discipline remains at the heart of my portraiture.
Large-Format Film
The large-format camera changes the experience of being photographed.
The process slows down. The sitter becomes aware that the portrait is being made with intention. There is time to talk, settle, and eventually forget about the camera.
The resulting negative is a physical object—the actual sheet of film exposed during the sitting.
For Atelier commissions, the selected Master Negative is transferred to the family archive along with the finished portrait.
Seeing the Person
After decades of photographing people, I have learned that the technical qualities of a photograph are only the beginning.
The real challenge is seeing the person.
A gesture changes. An expression softens. Someone stops thinking about the camera.
That is often where the portrait begins.
Film, Permanence, and Memory
Film is physical.
A negative can be held.
A print can be touched.
A portrait can remain on a wall.
An archive can pass from one generation to another.
The purpose is not nostalgia.
The purpose is permanence.
The Atelier accepts a limited number of private commissions each year and operates under a strict protocol of discretion.
